Guidance on using the tool and the defaults incorporated in the algorithm:
Data Completeness: For optimal results, all fields—including optional ones—should be completed.
Applicability: Not suitable for buildings with industrial processes (e.g., manufacturing) or for assets located outside of Canada.
Heating System Lifespan: A 25-year life expectancy for heating equipment.
Energy Source: For natural gas heating systems or equivalent carbon-intensive sources (e.g., district steam or hot water).
Consumption Estimates: Scores are based on average natural gas consumption per area, which may limit accuracy for portfolios with unusually high or low usage.
Usage Estimation: If annual natural gas usage is unavailable, estimates are derived from floor area or suite count (for MURBs), based on heating type.
Hold Period: Assets with a hold period under three years show reduced urgency in scoring.
Cooling Equipment: The tool assesses heating systems only. Cooling equipment renewal can also unlock decarbonization potential. If you have an upcoming renewal (chillers, cooling towers, roof-top units, unitary equipment), contact our team to explore opportunities.
Electricity use: The tool focuses on fuel-switching only. Buildings with high electricity uses, especially in locations with carbon-intensive grids like Alberta, can benefit from operational and efficiency improvements more than fuel-switching. If you have this type of asset, contact our team to explore opportunities.
